![]() Winner of the Dylan Thomas Prize, it is available now from Graywolf Press. Full of angular wit and profound truths, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers is a startlingly original and haunting debut by a significant new talent. His debut novel, Grief is the Thing with Feathers, is the official June pick of The Nervous Breakdown Book Club. Part novella, part polyphonic fable, part essay on grief, Max Porter's extraordinary debut combines compassion and bravura style to dazzling effect. As weeks turn to months and the pain of loss lessens with the balm of memories, Crow's efforts are rewarded and the little unit of three begins to recover: Dad resumes his book about the poet Ted Hughes the boys get on with it, grow up. Grief Is the Thing With Feathers is the most exquisite little flight of a story The Guardian Funny and warm and real, this little book is one to linger on and savour. This self-described "sentimental bird," at once wild and tender, who "finds humans dull except in grief," threatens to stay with the wounded family until they no longer need him. In this moment of violent despair they are visited by Crow-antagonist, trickster, goad, protector, therapist, and babysitter. The father imagines a future of well-meaning visitors and emptiness, while the boys wander, savage and unsupervised. ![]() ![]() And there are his two sons who like him struggle in their London apartment to face the unbearable sadness that has engulfed them. ![]() Here he is, husband and father, scruffy romantic, a shambolic scholar-a man adrift in the wake of his wife's sudden, accidental death. ![]()

![]() ![]() I never claimed to be completely sane in this. Calvin and Hobbes, just with a mafia killer. I guess you could say he was my “invisible friend” during the more troubled part of my teenage years. In fact, he became something like my favourite hobby, a constant voice that began to comment – bluntly, rudely – on my real life. ![]() Silvio is one of the characters I became obsessed with. It kept me awake in the boring lessons of school – that would be pretty much the whole school day, actually. I didn’t expect anybody but two or three friends to read the story. I was a budding writer with one sale under my belt and no clue. I “met” him first when he was in his early-to-mid-thirties, having just killed what I (faintly) remember was the head of police, of, I think, Los Angeles. At the center of the “Dark Soul” series is Silvio Spadaro, 24-year-old pansexual mafia hitman, at the same time emotionally stunted and very much liberated in his desires and identity. “Man, I’m in deep shit, I just killed the head of police.” Now, talk about an attention grabber. It’s like you suddenly have a guest in your head who begins to tell you stories – sometimes just anecdotes or a few sentences. Today Aleks is talking about what inspired that story, and in particular the flawed character of Silvio.Įvery story starts with a voice. ![]() ![]() This week our guest post is Aleksandr Voinov who’s story Dark Soul vol 1 was reviewed by me yesterday. ![]() ![]() ![]() We’re both quite submissive people, but if someone wanted to slap or use pain I know that Sophia doesn’t like that so I can step in. ‘We have boundaries with other people, and know what each other like. Since 2020, the federal government allowed telehealth providers to prescribe the medication without a medical visit to ensure people could still get it during lockdowns and reduce exposure to COVID. The proposal could change how more than 1 million Americans recovering from addiction can access this opioid-substitute medicine, used to stop cravings and block withdrawal symptoms for opioid-use disorder.
